Hunter hunting

Since moving into a neighborhood in the fall of 2006, Hunter has had fewer opportunities to go hunting. His favorite prey, pocket gophers and voles, are simply in short supply here, if at all. He's never been much of a birder, although he did once bring a live magpie into the house (more on that fiasco in a later post). Thus he mostly brings home mice, of which there are tons.

If I'm lucky enough to see him coming, I'll rush to close the window or door to keep him from bringing it into the house. They are typically alive and all Hunter really wants to do is show off to daddy and get some attention. Of which I give him tons but he then drops them, forgets to chase them, and they get behind stuff. Here are some images of his latest conquest on a great spring day, Cinco de Mayo, 2008.

Sorry for the airbrush look. Not sure what is wrong with my camera. In the video here, I love how Hunter is torn between gettin' some proud loving and playing with, and ultimately eating, his catch.

What kind of camera are you shooting these videos on?

Sony Cyber-shot.
It's a pretty simple pocket sized camera.

Model DSC-W100 8.1 Megapixels.

eBlogger only allows vids up to 100MB. The longer ones taken with the camera are 116 or so. Hence, putting them on YouTube.

Can you embed a YouTube video on your blog? I can, but I don't know if that is something H set up, or just comes with the blog stuff.

Yes you can. I embedded the Simon's Cat Video. I don't know if there is a size limit or not. All the vids on YouTube have an "Embed" code in the right-hand toolbar. Just copy and paste. I suppose I could just upload everything on YouTube and then Embed from there. Being a newbie, I'm just checking out the eBlogger functions.

My golden retriever, an avid vole-catcher, and Hunter would do some damage together. Watching them hunt is so jarring to me, though. It reminds me how primal they are and how much I project onto them.

I'm thinking that the dogs totally get me and understand my emotions, and they're just thinking, "foodfoodfoodfoodfoodfoodfoodfood."

I have to wonder if domesticated cats always hunt to eat or as a gift to their care giver. I mean Hunter would walk away and ignore the mouse completely if I wasn't right there. Only when I would try and get a close up shot with the camera would he come back and play with it. I've seen him do this before, totally loose interest as long as I'm petting him. Of course, the primal remnants are probably what makes him do it in the first place.

In my experience dogs pretty much devour or roll in whatever they catch or find. What is the saying, "If they can't eat it or f*** it, they piss on it." Don't get me wrong, I love dogs too. I prefer to think of "Buck" in London's classic "Call of the Wild."
